Kathleen Ernst wrote her first novel at fifteen, though her first book deal wouldn't come for another two decades. Raised in Maryland by a librarian mother and a father who read constantly, she studied forestry at West Virginia University while sneaking in creative writing and history classes on the side, and later worked in public television before she started writing the American Girl novels that led to her own fiction.

Her debut novel, The Night Riders of Harpers Ferry, appeared in 1996. This guide covers a later series instead: eleven Chloe Ellefson mysteries, from Old World Murder in 2010 through The Weaver's Revenge in 2021. She lives in Wisconsin with her husband, Scott.
