Kathleen E. Woodiwiss (1939–2007) is widely credited as a pioneer of modern historical romance. She wrote her breakthrough novel on an electric typewriter in Minnesota after early manuscripts, some 600 pages long, were turned down by hardcover publishers and found a home in paperback instead — format-defining for the genre that followed.
Her debut, The Flame and the Flower, launched the Birmingham Family Saga in 1972. This guide runs four books in that series through 2000's The Elusive Flame. Her final novel, Everlasting, was published posthumously after her death in 2007.
