Kevin O'Brien worked as a railroad inspector by day and wrote fiction by night, nearly giving up until the novelist Terry Brooks advised him to keep the day job until his writing could cover two years of expenses on its own — advice he credits with keeping him in the game. He studied journalism at Marquette University in Milwaukee.

His debut, Only Son, appeared in 1997. This guide covers a later series instead: two Family Secrets novels, The Betrayed Wife (2019) and The Bad Sister (2020). Born in Chicago, he now lives in Seattle.
