Before crime fiction, Kirk Mitchell served as a deputy sheriff on the Paiute-Shoshone reservation in eastern California and later worked as a metropolitan SWAT sergeant — law enforcement credentials that lend his procedural detail real weight. His novel High Desert Malice was an Edgar Award finalist in 1996.
His better-known work includes the Dee Laguerre Mystery series and the Emmett Parker and Anna Turnipseed novels, but this guide runs an earlier trilogy instead: Procurator (1984) through Cry Republic (1989), the books that started his career.
