Kate Elliott, born Alis A. Rasmussen in rural Oregon, met her husband in the middle of a swordfight and later followed him from a law enforcement career into archaeology, raising their three children across stops that included Mexican ruins, European bakeries, and Hawaii. She published her actual debut, The Labyrinth Gate, under her birth name in 1988, and didn't adopt the Kate Elliott byline until 1992's Jaran.
