Kelly McCaughrain started writing at six years old, in Belfast, though she kept the habit largely secret through much of her life — a fact she now uses to connect with young readers when she talks with them about writing. Anne of Green Gables was a formative early influence, and the pull toward storytelling never really left.

Her debut novel, Flying Tips for Flightless Birds, came out in 2018. This guide covers that single title, her only book published so far. She lives with her husband, Michael, and keeps busy leading writing workshops for teenagers.
