Before settling into writing, Kelly Barnhill worked as an educator, a park ranger, a secretary, and a janitor — a resume she credits with sharpening her instinct for character. Her honors since include the Newbery Medal (2017), the World Fantasy Award, and Jerome Foundation fellowships, and she lives with her husband, Ted Barnhill, and their three children.

Her first book was actually nonfiction, 2008's Animals with No Eyes, but her fiction debut, The Mostly True Story of Jack, arrived in 2011. This guide runs six novels from that debut through 2022's When Women Were Dragons.
