Kirk Mitchell worked in law enforcement before writing crime fiction — as a deputy sheriff on the Paiute-Shoshone reservation in Eastern California and later as a SWAT sergeant — and that firsthand experience shows in books that lean toward realistic, procedural detail. His novel High Desert Malice was a finalist for the Edgar Award in 1996.

He's best known for the Dee Laguerre Mystery and Emmett Parker and Anna Turnipseed series, but this guide covers an earlier body of work: three Procurator novels published between 1984 and 1989, from Procurator itself through Cry Republic.
