John Steinbeck (1902–1968) stirred plenty of controversy in his own lifetime for his outspoken left-wing politics, but it was his fiction that endured: Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and East of Eden remain the titles most readers know best. The first two, together with In Doubtful Battle, are often grouped as his "California" novels, all three set against the Dust Bowl.
He debuted in 1929 with Cup of Gold and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. This guide runs all thirty-four of his books, novels and nonfiction together, from that 1929 debut through 1991's Zapata.
