Robert Littell's path to spy fiction ran through real intelligence-adjacent work: four years in the U.S. Navy, then a Newsweek posting covering the Cold War as it happened. Brooklyn-born and an Alfred University graduate (class of 1956), he eventually settled in France, where an unusual hobby, boat building, rounds out the picture; his son, Jonathan Littell, became a notable writer in his own right.
His first book, the 1969 alternate history If Israel Lost the War, was co-written with Richard Z. Chesnoff and Edward Klein; a picture book, Left and Right with Lion and Ryan, followed in 1970. His solo breakthrough came with 1973's The Defection of A.J. Lewinter, winner of the Gold Dagger Award. This guide runs all twenty-two novels through 2020's Comrade Koba.
