Isabel Allende's first novel began as a letter. During her grandfather's grave illness she started writing to him, and those pages grew into The House of the Spirits, published in 1982 — the debut that introduced her blend of personal memory, history, myth, and a dash of magic now inseparable from the term magical realism.
The Chilean-American author started out in Spanish-language journalism, writing for publications such as Paula and Mampato, and after becoming a U.S. citizen in 1993 she settled in California, where she lives with her husband, fellow writer William C. Gordon. One of the most widely read names in Spanish-language literature, she has published twenty-six books between 1982 and 2025, all covered in this guide, ending with My Name Is Emilia Del Valle.
